How hard is starting welding?

1 answer Reward0 Remaining Time 0 Day

Going back to college, and going for welding. Im not smart in math, as in Im not to shabby with the 424x+b-c=y type of stuff. I can NOT do, and will refuse to do any thing that is above that as in calculus or anything well, else. Is this the right field for me? Is welding really that more technical than applying heat to a metal to make it melt to a another piece of metal? I know it has to be like 40 inches from the middle or left, But does the math really get any harder than that?

It all depends on what type of work you do. You can put a monkey into a welding job using a mig welder just for doing jig type work. Once you have set the mig welding voltage and wire feed speed you can train a guy or gal to weld pretty good in a few hours. See here for setting the voltage and wire speed: http://www.learn-how-to-weld.com/mig-welding/how-to-set-your-mig-welding-volts-and-wire-speed.html Same as if you are just welding up cattle panels and cattle crushes, all that stuff is done in a welding jig. Hold it in place and weld it up, piece of cake. But when you are in a general fabrication / engineering shop you might need to calculate simple things. Nothing too special. And anyway one you have worked out the math for that particular job, just write it down in your book and after a while you will know what it is all the time. My 2 cents....
