What is the best electrode to stick weld aluminum?

1 answer Reward0 Remaining Time 0 Day

I know when you stick weld aluminum you're more brazing than actually welding but i was just wondering about this, i want some electrodes just in case i need a temporary repair. Also what Amperage should i run it at,and what polarity?? my friend told me to run hotter than usual but hes only 14, and I dont know how reliable he is. Im 14 by the way also and have been welding for two years now and im always out running around the ranch doing small repairs. thanks ahead of time!

yep, you sure can stick weld aluminum. its incredibly difficult on anything thinner than 10 ga. a MIG wire feed spool gun shielded with 100% argon works better for thinner metals. the spool gun facilitates the conveyance of a soft, flimsy wire. 4043 wire in .035 diameter is the most versatile choice. DC negative polarity is required because aluminum is too conducive and your bead will splatter if the current is flowing from the work to the electrode. the current must flow from the electrode to the work. good luck! welding aluminum is a whole different ball game than welding steel. Miller and Lincoln have recently come out with vast internet resources that make it easier to learn on your own. a competent welder used to be the only way to learn this stuff. now they have tutorials online. I refer lots of new guys to weldingtipsandtricks.com.
