I need to weld 304L stainless steel to non-stainless steel. Can I do this? Also, will I need stainless steel welding wire?

As to welding stainless steel to carbon steel, the recommended filler wire is 309. Yes you can. If you plan on tig welding them, you may or may not need filler wire depending on whether you have a gap, or you're just going to butt them together. Not knowing the specifics of your tubing, your application, or the process you plan on using to weld them, i can't say for sure. If your application isn't related to piping and is something mechanical, i'd definitely recommend using a filler wire for strength. In the food industry for instance, It's common practice to tig weld sanitary tubing together without filler wire. We gas purge the tubing with argon, and then fuse the tubing together.
