Help with welding helmet?

1 answer Reward0 Remaining Time 0 Day

Im taking a welding class at my local CC and i need a welding helmet for Oxy/Acet welding. Ive been told to get a welding helmet with a #5 shade lens but i cant find any like that. i keep finding #10 Shade and i cant find any #5 replacement lenses. Wondering if a #10 would be too much.

Im a college student so along with books and other materials doesn't leave much room for a helmet. if anyone has any suggestions it would help. looking to spend no more than $40 on a helmet.

Thank you

Go to your local hardware or welding supply house and grab you a pair of cutting glasses. They will look black from the outside but the wearer will see through them a rich green color. There is your #5. They also make cutting goggles but the glasses look much cooler and you wont look like a steampunk weirdo. Wear a clear grinding shield/mask when you weld and you are good to go. Another alternative is to buy an auto datk hood that has a grinding setting on the lens setting and that is normally a #4 or #5, both are good for OAC welding. The choice is yours. Good luck in your class.
