Since you are taking the welding class, I am not going to tell you how to check regulators and such (that is what the class is for). I have been welding a long time and when I first started, I was a bit nervous too. Honestly, there was no comfort for me until I started welding and saw how easy it actually was. Follow the rules and you will be fine--> welding equipment is designed to help the user be safe; that isn't to say that things can't go wrong but you will quickly learn that you'd have to make a really stupid mistake to have anything majorly go wrong.
MAJOR TIPS:
oxy-acetylene--> keep the torch pointed away from you. (that's about it)
SMAW--> never make your body the completion of the electrical circuit
NOTE: if you have any medical equipment in your body such as a pace maker DO NOT WELD!!!
You will do fine. Take it slow, follow the rules, and even if you forget something and start to panic--> calm down and keep your head.
