What is wrong with my welds?

1 answer Reward0 Remaining Time 0 Day

my arc welds hold but they are missing the filling on the inside. i was always told to watch the weld fill in beihnd the rod to judge your speed but i am having trouble with the rod melting in behind it. it almost seems as if the flames is blowing the rod's remains to the sides and leaving nothing on the inside. maybe i have it set to high and the flame is whats blowing it?

Four possible things to help you with this.... ONE, clean the surface with something like Brake Clean from a local auto parts store. There is a chance that your project is has dirt or rust on it. TWO, try chaning the angle of direction. When arc welding, I usually change the direction depending on the metal size and strength. THREE, you have the amp setting too low. The arc is melting the rod, but not bonding to your metal. You can test this by jacking up the setting until the weld starts to warp the metal (showing when its too high). FOUR, finally you might have the wrong metal. You can't welt steal to iron or steel to aluminum. If you have the wrong rods, then all it will do is cause burn marks, while the rod melts/beads off.
