With gas welding or cutting, it is like looking at the sun, extremely bright with a lot of infrared. With arc welding, the arc is extremely bright and gives off huge amounts of ultraviolet light and infrared. Ulatraviolet is the active ingredient in getting a sunburn. The damage that is most harmful is from the ultraviolet. You literally get a sunburned retina, which remarkably enough is relatively painless so you do not know anything is happening until it is too late and you are half blind or blinded from the scar tissue as a result of the sunburned retina... THAT is why an arc welder wears all kinds of protection to prevent the ultraviloet from reaching the skin in addition to the heavy filter that you look through.
