    Type of metal, how thick it is, what machine you have (a/c or d/c) condition of metal to be welded. e6011 - use on ac/dc machine for general welding. Choice for dirty or oil contaminated mild steel. e6010 - use on dc machine for general welding. Choice for drill stem or contaminated mild steel. e7018ac- for use on ac machine, better choice for structural welds. Mild steel, must be clean. e 7018- same as the 7018ac but for dc use. e309L - d/c rod for welding stainless/dissimilar steels. Some "voodoo"rods that are expensive are just a version of 309L. Very strong weld, cutting torch will not cut it. This is just a few out of hundreds.
