In contrast to arc welding methods, oxy-acetylene welding doesn't emit much ultraviolet. The danger with OAW comes from the opposite end of the spectrum, in infrared. However, from across the street the danger is likely to be minimal. (Let me state again that ARC welding methods DO emit significant UV rays in addition to visible light and you should not view the arc unless you are more than 30 meters away.) NOTE ordinary sunglasses do NOT offer sufficient protection from infrared nor are they designed for that.. You should use protective eyewear that is expressly designed for welding.
