You probably was not exposed to it long enough to do damage. It may have strained your eyes some but maybe not damaged them. Yes you can get flash burns from reflected welding light off a shiny surface. One of the worst flash burns I have ever had was from reflected light! I was welding on some stainless steel and the only weldor welding so it was me that cause the flash burn. I could see the reflection of the light off a surface behind me in my own hood and thought man that is neat, wow did I pay for it that night! The next burn I got was from another weldor welding behind me (we took turns welding and fitting). That is when I learned to use tinted safety glasses. So to answer your question Yes you could damage your eyes from the reflected light but it takes some time to do it not just a few minutes (in my 2 incidents it was hours).
