It's called a mud board_at least that's what we call it where I work. Every welder and every welding truck has it. It's purpose is mainly two fold. First, it keeps you out of the mud. Second, it can be used to rest your arm on while welding in super out of position occasions. I've even seen one guy use his as a little step stool.
To make one you'll need some 1X6 lumber, large pallets work great, and some 1 1/2" deck screws. You'll want four boards cut 4' long and three cut at 25". Take and lay two of the shorties parallel to one another and 4' apart. Lay the longer boards on top cross-wise with a 1" spacing. Screw the boards together with three screws at each intersection. Make sure it's reasonably square and the boards are sucked tight by the screws. Put the last short board in the middle and screw it in also.
If my description is lacking to what they look like, just picture a wooden pallet. They look very similar.
