Help on Arc/Stick Welding?

1 answer Reward0 Remaining Time 0 Day

I now have a contruction class that i can weld in. My welds are alright, said by senior members but I wanted to be sure and ask for some help on here. The bead on the weld is submerged inside of the metal, and is also a large bead, thicker than 2 pens stuck together side by side. Some of my welds are kind of hilly and stick out of the metal, a fair bit. I know that this is the stupidest question, but how do i keep the rod from sticking to the metal, when I need to to touch the metal usually to start the arc? Sorry if these are stupid questions but I'm new to welding, and any tips would be appreciated.

I'm not an expert on welding, but I taught myself how to do it to build one of those backless chairs - the ones I bought kept falling apart. I published the project on my blog, and it's one of the most popular topics on there (and the chair is bombproof). What I found was that you have to have the right current set for the thickness of rod you're using, otherwise you don't get a proper melt and the rod sticks. I figured this out when I moved up to a thicker rod and didn't change the current. It can also stick if you don't keep a steady gap and keep touching the rod to the assembly.
