    Actually steel IS an alloy. Alloy simply means a combination of materials, and in the case of steel you at least need extra carbon, which gives it the hardness as compared to just iron. BTW, alloy comes from French and means according to law. As particularly in jewelery the composition was legally fixed to prevent people from being cheated.
