Metal alloys are created to enhance the property of the metal. Steel is mostly iron with a small percentage of carbon to enhance the strength of the iron. Brass is a combination of copper and zinc and its malleability is better than either of its components, so it's used for instruments.
Other properties like magnetism, conductivity and density in addition to tensile strength and malleability can be enhanced by mixing a metal with a non-metal or another metal.
