Steel is an alloy of iron with other elements like C, Cr, Ni etc. High carbon steel contains more % of C than the other elements. Adding carbon increases the strength of iron because carbon atoms can fit into the interstitial crystalline lattice sites of the body-centered cubic (BCC) arrangement of the iron atoms. As a result the lattice becomes close packed and reduces the dislocations. As the dislocations are minimized, iron becomes more hard and strong.
