How to pass a coast gaurd aluminium welding test?

I am about to take an aluminium welding test welding two 3/8 plates together, in the verticle and horizontal positions. What should your machine be set on apoximatly? And please tell me any suggestion you may have.

Well I would need a little more information to answer your question like what type of welding process you are using? Stick, TIG, MIG,etc.? I do know that if you go to Lincoln Electric's website you will be able to look up anything you need to know about welding in their catalogs. Just click on the process you are using and find the type of electrode you will be using and it will tell you the settings for a 3/8" plate. http://www.lincolnelectric.com/products/litrequest/
