    I would, and here's why: you'll tip the hood up to grind or brush the weld, right...? Now, if you're only welding and not grinding, and nobody else is grinding you might be able to get away with it. It's always a good habit to wear your safety glasses any time you're in the shop, even if you're not working on anything. They're more comfortable than blindness.
