The move follows a proposal by the European Union to ban tungsten halogen lamps and compact fluorescent lamps as light sources by 2020 under its new eco-design Working Plan. This has been protested jointly by theaters and Lighting designers, and the Lighting designers association has launched a campaign called Save Stage Lighting to fight the proposal.

The association of lighting designers has written a petition to the European Union's energy agency seeking immunity from the legislation for entertainment lighting, such as theaters. "We strongly urge professional entertainment lighting equipment and light bulbs to be exempted from these proposed regulations and any future legislation that may directly affect the use and availability of the equipment."

The eu proposal, they said, would deal a direct and even overwhelming and devastating blow to theaters, stadiums and other venues across Europe, as well as to the entertainment industry and European culture. Under the proposal, the minimum efficiency requirements for all light source 85 lumens per watt, one of the biggest standby power of 0.5 watts, including high quality LED lighting equipment to enter the market in recent years, would be banned.

This means that almost all European venue infrastructure and inventory needs an overhaul, most of the theatre, including theater, small theater, amateur theater, universities, schools, clubs, bars, village hall, etc. Most of the lighting lamps and lanterns will be out of date, and for several decades only need some regular maintenance or replacement new bulb fixtures, will become a pile of scrap metal and small pieces.

If the proposal is approved, the British theatre alone could face losses of about 1 billion pounds (8.55 billion yuan), according to calculations by people involved. In response, the London theatre association and the British theatre association issued a joint statement saying that "the draft new EU ecological design legislation will seriously affect existing stage lighting equipment". "These changes will have a significant impact on the way the show is lit and will have a significant impact on performing arts institutions and other venues, some of which may have to be shut down."

Save Stage Lighting sports participants said that we are not against to protect the precious resources, but the Lighting is not a big energy users: Lighting show in a relatively short period of time only, and show relatively few times a week, the lamps and lanterns is rarely at the same time, it will light up. Studies in recent years have shown that stage lighting typically accounts for less than 5 percent of a theater's total energy consumption.

Before it is worth noting that the Save Stage Lighting sports related personnel has met with the European commission, and shall submit to the commission the immunity for entertainment Lighting, theatre or is expected to receive immunity.
