Content：     India’s major ports, which together account for roughly 70 percent of the country’s total container trade, are bracing for an indefinite strike on August 18, 2017. With the threat of a labor stoppage looming, six federations representing port and dock workers have continued to request that the Indian Central government protect the jobs, wage structure, and service conditions—including retirement benefits of the pensioners.

     The strike action stems from disapproval of the Major Ports Authority Bill 2016, “which has been fast-tracked by the government in order to attract more private investment and enhance port efficiency. The bill would eventually lead to total privatization of India’s major ports and their roughly 50,000 workers”

     The federations most recently served a strike notice on Thursday, August 3rd. In the notice, the leaders expressed grave concern over the situation at the ports due to the Central government’s corporate and labor policies that would potentially impact the livelihood of workers across the country.
 
     The ports that may be impacted by a nationwide strike include Kolkata, Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Chennai, Tuticorin, Cochin, New Mangalore, Mumbai, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, Kandla, and Marmugao.
