Manual Metal Arc Welding?

1 answer Reward0 Remaining Time 0 Day

I have acquired an oldish, but barely used, manual metal arc welder (100 amp rating) in part payment for a debt. Are they any good? And how easy is arc welding? I vaguely remember having to weld two pieces of metal together once, during my mis-spent youth ..... that was a long time ago ..... the nearest I've ever done since then has been soldering (electronics, and domestic plumbing -- 15 mm. and 22 mm. copper pipe).

If you mean a stick welder, yes they are good and useful, however the bigger the better and 100A is small-medium size. However, it takes a LOT of practice to become a good welder. That means time and $$ for practice supplies. Make sure you have good safety equipment (welding helmet, gloves, etc.) and the leads from the welder are in good shape. If you aren't inclined to spend a lot in practice, sell the unit.
