What does it mean when a welder has a 1/8 maximum welding thickness?

And can a person just build onto their weld with a 1/8 welder instead of buying a welder that welds 1/4 inch?

It will only do 1/8" or less material. No you can not weld 1/4" or 1/2" by just adding layers of weld it will not penetrate properly. At best it will "stick" in a few places then the weld will fail when you don't want it to. To properly mig weld 1/4" or 1/2" you need a minimum of 200 amps and gas shielding, not the flux core gassless migs.
