What types of jobs are available in welding?

1 answer Reward0 Remaining Time 0 Day

I am 23 years old and have been thinking very seriously about going to school to learn the welding trade. I love to work with my hands and enjoy building things, and I'm not afraid of some hard work. I want to know what options I'll have when I'm done with school. Do all welders end up making $15 per hour working some mind numbing city job? Do all welders have to travel all the time to work on pipelines? Can someone make a good living working in shop or doing fabrication? If so, what are those jobs like? I live in Los Angeles if that helps. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Especially from an experienced welder. Thank you.

Welding is a good trade. My friend is a welder he makes decent money, but he works in a crappy place because he doesn't want to get drug tested. Welders get the most money for underwater welding. Where you work and how good you are depends on you level of commitment. I myself am a toolmaker. I remember one time when an engineer screwed up a titanium plate that was 22" by 18". He drew the hole in the wrong spot. Well we needed to get the plate welded so, we took it to the best guy in town. The guy may have been a welder, but his work area looked like he was on vacation. He had a bar and a t.v.. The people there didn't mind because he was the best at what he did.
