When processing ductile iron (including intermittent turning), a single WC-Co alloy is used as the substrate. When processing low-alloy steel and stainless steel (including forgings and intermittent turning), TiC with a content of less than 3% and a TaC of about 3% are generally added as a matrix. The matrix applied to the Al203 coating under high-speed cutting should focus on the resistance to thermoplastic deformation and the resistance to the crater wear. The strength and toughness of the matrix can be slightly lower. Conversely, TiC coatings are used for rough cutting at lower cutting speeds and large feed rates. At this time, the strength and toughness of the base cemented carbide are better, and the resistance to thermoplastic deformation is moderate. In order to obtain good resistance to thermoplastic deformation of the substrate, it is preferred to use a substrate having a low carbon content and a low amount of drilling. It can be seen from the above analysis that for different coatings, the matching matrix should be used in order to obtain good performance.
