W is used as an alloying element in high temperature alloys. W wire is used in incandescent light bulb filaments (but incandescent lights are going the way of slide rules and typewriters). W powder compacts are infiltrated with silver to make electrical contacts for making and breaking (arcing) contacts in high current, high voltage applications. Pure W rods are used as the electrode for TIG (tungsten inert gas) welding. W is used as W-silicide in semiconductor processes, a very important but low volume use. There are a number of other specialty uses.
