Hobby welding quiestions?

1 answer Reward0 Remaining Time 0 Day

Hi, I just bought a small dc arc welder, Ive done some welding before in college but never set up the welder.

How do you know how much current to set the welder to? trial and error?

Also should i try and mathch the electrode thickness to the material i am welding?

I need to weld a patch onto an exhaust on my car at somestage too. Is there a special type of electrode for different types of steel?

I know im a total amature, but im eager to learn!!

The best way is to tig weld it. You could mig weld it also. But they both use argon gas for shielding. You could use a torch and a rod called an Aladdin rod ( http://www.aladdin3in1.com/index.htm ) It is brazing not welding if you use this. If it is thin I have seen people use propane torches with the Aladdin rod. Good luck! Additional - What do you call argon gas? (hint - inert gas) Inert or noble gas is, helium (He), neon (Ne), argon (Ar), krypton (Kr), xenon (Xe) and radon (Rn)
