       Which one has better wear resistance, ceramic coating or tungsten carbide coating?



       There are many kinds of ceramic coatings, which have been explained in detail in the previous article. Then the wear resistance needs to be analyzed in detail. Take the common alumina coating as an example: everyone usually thinks that the hardness of alumina is very high, and the hardness of the alumina coating is also very high. This is a wrong understanding. First of all, a concept must be distinguished. The hardness of the material and the hardness of the coating are not equivalent. The hardness of the material affects the hardness of the coating, but cannot determine the hardness of the coating. The hardness of the material has a great relationship with the arrangement of molecules or atoms. The hardness of the coating is determined by the material of the coating and the spraying process, but it is useless if the hardness of the material is high. A retired old professor from a certain academy once told me when he was chatting with me that he did the experiment of alumina coating, why the hardness was very low, no matter how the process was adjusted, the hardness could not go up. In fact, it is because the hardness of the coating is not only affected by the coating material itself, but also by the spraying process. Therefore, the performance of the coating obtained by the same spraying material with different spraying processes can be very different, and even if different spraying processes are used, the hardness of the obtained coating is similar, and the wear resistance will be different. The factor involves the phase composition of the coating. Simply put, the coating material undergoes a phase change during processing. In a word, ceramic coating and tungsten carbide coating are usually used under completely different working conditions. It is not suitable to do tungsten carbide coating where ceramic coating is suitable. Similarly, products suitable for tungsten carbide coating are oxidized. The material coating also does not get the desired effect. Therefore, it is not possible to say which coating has good wear resistance. Coatings are highly targeted and applied to specific working conditions.
