Carbides are also known as cermet materials. Such as WC, TiC, VC, Cr3C2, NbC, ZrC, etc., with high melting point, high hardness and stable chemical properties; it has typical metallic properties, and its resistivity and magnetic susceptibility can be compared with transition metal elements and alloys. Most carbides are metallic conductors with high thermal conductivity.

The hardness of carbides decreases as the temperature increases. TiC is the hardest at room temperature, but its hardness decreases sharply as the temperature increases. WC has a relatively high hardness at room temperature, and its hardness decreases less at 1000 ℃, and it is the carbide with the highest high temperature hardness.

Carbides are prone to oxidation when the temperature is raised in the air; due to the high hardness of carbides and poor adhesion to the base metal when sprayed, pure carbide powders are rarely used alone as coating materials. Usually Co, Ni, Ni-Cr, Ni-based metals or alloys are used as binder phases to form composite powder materials, which are the most important raw materials for coating materials.
