Steam is usually used to remove organic fouling from the surface of parts, which is an economical and effective method. The workpiece should be baked for 15min~30min to remove oil stains in the crevices and pores on the surface. Porous materials like sand castings or grey cast iron should take longer to bake. During steam degreasing or cleaning, if the object to be processed is too large, the object can be soaked in hot detergent or oil-free solvent and cleaned by a special person. Residues on the surface of the workpiece should be removed mechanically.

In terms of safety and cleaning temperature, a 1:1:1 degreaser is usually used: perchloroethylene: trichloroethylene: trichloroethane. Many hydrocarbon solvents are hazardous and should be used strictly in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions.

Chlorinated solvents leave a fine residue that can be removed by immersion washing or by wiping with isopropyl alcohol and butyl ester. Because chlorine gas can induce cracks on titanium and titanium alloy materials, it is forbidden to use chloride solvents to clean such materials. Such parts can be washed with alkali, steam, acid leaching or volatile solvent. If necessary, any two or more of the above methods can be used for composite degreasing.
