Boron is a non-metallic element with light weight and strong chemical activity. It is similar to carbon in chemical activity. It can interact with the transition metal elements (Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Mo, W) to generate MB or M2B borides.

Borides have typical ceramic properties: high melting point, high hardness, stable chemical properties, strong acid corrosion resistance and high temperature oxidation resistance, second only to silicides. Low vapor pressure, especially suitable for high temperature (above 2500℃) materials used in vacuum. At the same time, metal borides show the characteristics of metals, and most of them have good electrical conductivity.

Boron is easy to form low melting point boride or low melting point eutectic with Fe, Al, etc. Therefore, it is generally not suitable to spray boride coating on Fe and Al substrates.

Borides, especially chromium boride, are the main wear-resistant and strengthening phases of nickel-based, cobalt-based and iron-based self-fluxing alloys widely used in thermal spraying technology.
