Tin is a relatively active metal. When exposed to air or containing oxidants, tin corrodes in inorganic acids and most organic acids. However, in the absence of air, tin has excellent corrosion resistance in dilute acid solutions.

Pure tin can be used as a spray material. Among them, white tin has ductility and can be made into wire for spraying. Spraying with tin wire can get an ideal dense coating with good corrosion resistance, low hardness and easy polishing. It is worth noting that in many corrosive media, tin is an electrochemical cathode relative to the steel matrix, so it has a protective effect on the steel material only after it is completely sealed. Tin coatings are sometimes sprayed on vehicles or storage tanks for chemical solvents to prevent the solvent from coming into contact with steel materials and to avoid solvent contamination.

In the machinery industry, tin wire and its babbitt alloy can be used as a wear-resistant coating for bearings, bearing bushes and other sliding friction parts that do not require high strength.
