How to measure the density of tungsten carbide powder and specific operations

Tungsten carbide particles Tungsten carbide powder

Tungsten carbide powder (WC) is the main raw material for the production of cemented carbide, chemical formula WC. The full name is Wolfram Carbide, also translated as tungsten carbide. It is a black hexagonal crystal with metallic luster and hardness similar to diamond. It is a good conductor of electricity and heat. The melting point is 2870℃, the boiling point is 6000℃, and the relative density is 15.63 (18℃). Tungsten carbide is insoluble in water, hydrochloric acid and sulfuric acid, but easily soluble in a mixed acid of nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid. Pure tungsten carbide is fragile. If a small amount of titanium, cobalt and other metals are added, the brittleness can be reduced. Tungsten carbide used as a steel cutting tool is often added with titanium carbide, tantalum carbide or their mixture to improve the anti-knock ability. The chemical properties of tungsten carbide are stable.

Tungsten carbide powder is mainly used to produce cemented carbide special-shaped parts. In tungsten carbide, carbon atoms are inserted into the interstices of the tungsten metal lattice without destroying the original metal lattice, forming interstitial solid solutions, so it is also called interstitial (or intercalation) compound. Tungsten carbide can be made by heating a mixture of tungsten and carbon at high temperature. The presence of hydrogen or hydrocarbons can accelerate the reaction. If the oxygen-containing compound of tungsten is used for preparation, the product must be vacuum treated at 1500°C to remove the carbon and oxygen compounds. Tungsten carbide is suitable for mechanical processing at high temperatures, and can be used to make cutting tools, structural materials for kilns, jet engines, gas turbines, nozzles, armor-piercing bullet cores, etc. The true density test is an important indicator in the application of this material.

The density of tungsten carbide powder has a great relationship with the purity of tungsten carbide. The higher the density, the higher the purity indirectly, because tungsten carbide alloy is considered to be denser in the alloy system. It is necessary in the industrial application of tungsten carbide. For true density index analysis and strict standards, it is recommended to use a fully automatic operation based on the principle of gas displacement, with extremely high precision and repeatability. The specific steps for the use of the true density meter are as follows:

1. Sampling and weighing the sample according to the national standard GB1427; in this process, you can turn on the main body of the true density analyzer first, and use the preparation time to preheat;

2. Dry the samples with good samples, and set the temperature and time strictly during drying to prevent danger;

3. Take out the sample bin, load the sample and use the tare weighing method, use a 10,000-digit balance to weigh, and record the net weight of the sample;

4. Put the sample compartment with the sample loaded into the experiment compartment carefully, and close the compartment cover with the handle and sleeve;

5. Create a new task on the touch screen and enter parameters. Since opening the warehouse and putting the sample will cause some heat loss in the heating system, you can set the preheating time on the panel at this time, or wait for the preheating to complete, and then start to press the start button on the touch screen;

6. After the test is completed, the main unit of the instrument emits a beep. At this time, the true density data result can be seen, and the result can be exported via U disk
